Building a computer for a friend - Part 1

Well I’ve finally started ordering parts to build a computer for a friend.

So far I’ve ordered the following:
MSI K8T Neo-FIS2R motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ cpu
Western Digital 120gig special edition hard drive
Sony dual layer dvd burner
NEC 1.44mb floppy drive

I still need to order the following parts:
ATI 9800 pro 256mb video card
Crucial 1gig ddr 3200 ram (2 x 512mb)
Antec Performance Plus 1080AMG case w/ 430watt truepower power supply
17” crt monitor (probably viewsonic)
Microsoft keyboard
Microsoft optical mouse
speakers (some brand of surround sound w/ sub)

I think that covers everything I will need.  The motherboard comes with gigabit nic and 6 channel sound.  Sure a real sound card would sound maybe a bit better and not use as much cpu resources but for my friend it’ll be more than enough.

I’ll probably buy the video card, ram, case and maybe the monitor online.  The keyboard, mouse and speakers I’ll just get locally.  I’ll just run into staples and grab them this weekend.  I’ll look around locally to see if I can get a good deal on a monitor.  It would be nice not to have to order the monitor online since the shipping costs are going to end up being pretty big.

Anyhoo, I’m really excited.  This will be my first computer build in more than 2 years.  The last time I built a computer was for the family’s system and that was really more of an upgrade than a complete build from scratch.

The great part is that I’m getting paid to do it!  I’m charging 5% of the subtotal for the build fee.  The total cost will be somewhere in the $1500.00 range so I’ll probably make about $75 on it.  Not bad for doing something I like to do for fun!

I actually just finished building a computer for my brother’s gf.  Wasn’t as spiffy as yours will be.  It had:

Syntax SV400 MB
Athlon XP 2800+
Kingston 512 MB PC3200 DDR RAM
Radeon 9600 128 MB
CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive
80 GB WD HD
Bitchin’ custom case
17” monitor

Yeah, not as spiffy, but good nonetheless.  I’m busy trying to build myself a computer right now, but I can’t get Windows to install on it for the life of me.  That and the MB likes to pretend that there is only 1024 K of RAM every now and then.  I’m about ready to just give up and resell the parts on ebay and live with my laptop.
